Unawatuna Beach is certainly one of the best dive sites in Sri Lanka. Protected by coral reefs and safe swimming, wreck & reef diving plus some surf points are making this South Coast village a more and more popular diving destination. You can enjoy a perfect Unawatuna dive from mid October to end of April. During the rest of the year the sea is too rough quite frequently, and the visibility under water isn't good enough. Swimming though can be enjoyed - also by your kids! - throughout the year because a reef is keeping the high waves off the Unawatuna bay.
Boat diving and snorkeling to all dive sites in and around Unawatuna is available through several operators. As always, we recommend that you check their feedbacks and credentials through Tripadvisor and other resources. 100+ Facebook 'Likes' are not necessarily a reference. Wreck diving excursions to SS Rangoon and many other wrecks around Unawatuna and Galle can be arranged by one of the Unawatuna Dive Centres.
Many of the learn to dive courses include dives from Unawatuna Beach. The diving conditions are ideal with a gently sloping sandy bottom and plenty of marine life. It is ideal for training dives. Snorkel and scuba diving equipment can easily be hired from one of the Unawatuna Dive Centres.
The most common learn-to-dive programs in Unawatuna are from PADI. The full range of PADI diver training courses from entry level to Instructor and the full range of Specialty Instructor training are available.
